About Us > Michael Wangen
Michael Wangen is an architect who genuinely loves his work; unable to separate his passion for design from his travels, readings, and wanderings he finds design influences in all. With more than 15 years of professional experience as an architect he brings a seasoned technical hand to bear in his work at Indigo. Elegant, restrained simplicity is a hallmark of his work; beauty through simplicity being a classically timeless approach. His outward earnestness belies a passionate and thoughtful inner spirit.
With a Bachelor of Arts from University of Washington and a Masters of Architecture from Ohio State University his education included coursework at the Architectural Association School in London and Andres Duany’s Techniques of Traditional Town Planning seminar at Harvard University. Additionally, Michael spent a seminal year of his design studies in Rome Italy where it was rumored he wore a cape! Michael is a licensed architect in Washington and Florida. While he is a native North Westerner, (born on Bainbridge Island), raised in Missoula Montana, just prior to coming to Indigo, Michael spent 5 years in Vero Beach, Florida with Peter Moor Architects and also as sole proprietor of Michael J. Wangen Architects. During this time he also served as a Vero Beach City Councilman.
His working relationship with Jeb Thornburg first developed while the two were young associates at NBBJ Architects in Seattle, including direct collaboration on a number of award winning projects. The kinship remained as their paths temporarily diverged and they find themselves enthusiastically together again stoking a common design fire. When asked about his favorite project, his mantra rings true, “the one I’m working on!”
