This modest one story 1700sf "1950’s modern" house was recently passed down from mother to daughter. In our age of "disposable everything" the new, old, recycled occupant’s ambition to get more miles from this well worn classic seemed laudable. The work did not include any additions to the home, but rather an updating of most all of the interior finishes and an entirely new kitchen. Additionally, new roofing, windows and a thoughtful exterior paint scheme give the originally simple forms a fresh look. The new finishes were designed to be sympathetic to the character of the era of the original house, but with a bit of fresh fun thrown in. The owners are avid gardeners, and live half the summer outside; a new stained concrete floor becomes patio outside, and a quirky new center pivot window becomes a door, blurring the lines between inside and out. Cerused oak cabinets take on a driftwood character with basalt stone counters recalling the nearby colors of the beach rocks. Simple 3x6 tiles in fabulous 50’s colors bring whimsy to the bathroom and happy comments from surprised guests who remember the colors from their own childhood.
