A well loved 1930’s working mans cottage in a charming close to town neighborhood gets an update and an addition to accommodate a growing family. The design approach was driven by a desire to maintain the charms of the modest physical presence of the house from the street, but at the same time, almost double the useable size of the house. Solution… hide the master bedroom in a dormer story, and make the family room its own small pavilion in the backyard, leaving the basic size, shape and scale of the main house nearly unchanged. Oh, and one final surprise, a dog gone great deck with all the good stuff; fireplace, outdoor kitchen, covered trellis and the powerful green thumb of these gardener owners. In spite of the new more accommodating room sizes, I think we might just find this family outside…..
